30 Hour Famine 2013

Here we are in the midst of the Famine.

There are almost thirty people involved this weekend with a mix of middle school students, high school students, and leaders young and old. We've been at it for twenty-three hours so far and we wanted to let you know some of what we've been up to.

Last night we split the 30 Hour Famine team into two groups. A team of eight students headed off to Fred Meyer. We assigned each team members different items to buy to make care kits for the HOME ministry homeless guys staying our church this month. We purchased tooth brushes and toothpaste, razers and shaving cream, socks, chapstick, deodorant, and bar soap for each guy. We had to manage a budget, find all the items, and when we had conquered the shopping we came back to church to build the kits. It took us a half an hour to build the kids with our highly efficient assembly line. ANd then we wrote letters to each of the guys in the program who would get a kit. We included bible verses in each letter and talked about why those verses had been meaningful for us and our hope they would find encouragement in them.

The other half of us stayed here at church and made and served dinner for the HOME ministry guys. We made pork roast, garlic mashed potatoes, gravy, and lovely veggies. The best part was for dsessert when we served ooey, gooey brownies. After we served dinner, we helped pack up sandwich lunches for each of the guys. And then we got to hang out and spend time with them in conversation. Many of our students were able to relaize that homelessness effects people from all walks of life and learn that circumstances don't have to remove your ability to hope.

Today we are spending the morning working on projects to spread awareness of GOd's love for everyone, especially those who are overlooked and ignored. Projects like this blog post =)  Also we have team members making memes, videos, facebook posts, murals, and pictures that can help us spread the word.

Later today we get to worship with the Nepali Speaking church that meets here and is partnering with KCC in ministry. And celebrate communion together. And eat breakfast for dinner. It's going to be so good!
